Z's Oyster Bar & Steakhouse ROCKS!

posted Saturday, 2 June 2007

We're writers, webmasters and publishers - ordinary people - and we will never be accused of being snobby restaurant critics. But even the most snooty critics are wowed by the restaurant Mehrzad Sharbaiani operates in eastern Louisville, on Whittington Parkway. You know Z's is special from the moment you walk in the door. The atmosphere is elegant, but not gaudy. At Z's men can be comfortable meeting for dinner and so can women. The term formally comfortable comes to mind.

The second thing you notice is the wine rack. It's HUGE! If Mehrzad doesn't have it, you don't want to drink it!

Dinner at Z's is a remarkable experience, not to be missed. I treated the TravelHost staff and my wife, Sande, to dinner at Z's a few nights ago. Sande and Jessica Hebert, our newest Account Executive, both ordered the lobster tails. Tricia had a steak and I chose a little of both, with Mehrzad's Surf & Turf. We tried a couple of appetizers, fresh oysters on the half shell and my regular favorite, calamari.

We were all blown away. The steaks are HUGE and fork tender. The seafood is fresh and I do mean fresh. Mehrzad is truly a magician when it comes to oysters. These critters were at the bottom of the ocean only hours ago! I have no idea how Mehrzad gets them from "there" to my table so quickly! Calamari was okay, but all calamari is okay in my book.

But now let's talk about the star of the show - the lobster tail. Yes, I know - lobster tail is for rookies. Whole lobster is the only way to go for true connesieurs. Maybe at most places but not at Z's. There aren't enough superlatives in the English language to adequately describe the lobster tails. They were prepared with perfection and presented with equal perfection. They were large, sweet and tender. This lobster melts in your mouth. It is the best lobster I've eaten since a trip to Fisherman's Wharf in Boston with my parents back in 1968.

Z's is not an inexpensive place to dine, so prepare yourself for that. But if you are looking for a place to have dinner with someone special and you want to be absolutely certain that everything is going to be perfect, then take that special someone to Z's.
